During the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown, the Markham Town Quilter Guild invited a speaker to discuss Hawaiian quilting. She shared some tips about this unique quilting technique and provided instructions for one block for us to practice. I tried it and truly enjoyed the handwork. Inspired, I later purchased the book “Hawaiian Quilting” by Elizabeth Root, which includes patterns for 20 full-size blocks.
Before the pandemic, I used to submit entries to the Owen Sound Quilt Show every year. One year, one of my quilts won first place, and the prize was ten pieces of 1-yard batik fabric. I saved these fabrics because I wanted to use them for a special quilt. Eventually, I decided to incorporate them into my Hawaiian quilt.
I completed 18 blocks using the Hawaiian quilting technique, and I thoroughly enjoyed the hand applique process. I also hand-quilted the entire quilt. From start to finish, this project took me five years to complete, but it turned out beautifully. All the hard work really paid off!
