CHINESE NEW YEAR

A few days before the Chinese New Year, people will do a complete cleaning of the house which signifies removal of the old and welcoming of the new. After the cleaning, people will decorate their house to welcome the New Year. Most of the decorations are in red and the most popular New Year decorations are “FU”, banner & door god.

The New Year’s Eve dinner is the most important dinner for the Chinese. Normally, this is the family reunion dinner, especially for those with family members away from home. This is what I based my wall hanging design on.

I used fabric to create the door and a traditional Chinese style door knot. I had a pair of Chinese children for the door decoration and I used the pictures to draw on fabric and appliqué onto the door. When you open the door, you will see a family having their dinner and the decoration on the wall. The middle square is FU (福), meaning “fortune”, “good luck” and “blessing”. The right banner means “good luck and prosperity” and the left banner means “be safe when entering & exiting”.
Happy New Year!
